Legislative Update

Week of June 19, 2023

Bills being heard in committee are now likely to pass the House or Senate floor the same day, which is an indication that session is coming to a close. Although the legislature will still be in session in mid-July, movement on bills is likely to slow down after next week.

Senate Bill 171, Department of Public Safety Agency Bill.-AB, passed two House committees and then floor this week. This bill has provisions requested by the State Capitol Police, Highway Patrol, National Guard, and Samarcand. An amendment to allow DPS to retain proceeds from the sale of land or facilities owned by DPS was adopted. The bill will now go back to the Senate for concurrence, but some technical changes need to be made so the Senate will likely not concur. This means members from the House and Senate will be appointed to a small conference committee to work on the final product.
